To assess general psychopathology (non-syndrome-specific, including subclinical), several instruments were used in the BASE intensive protocol (IP):
(1) For screening purposes, the Specific Behavior and Speech scale, which was developed within the BASE psychiatry unit, was used by the psychiatrists as well as the research assistants (see observation protocol) to rate certain features of participants' behavior and speech. Judgements were made on a 4-point-Likert-scale (1 = certainly not, 4 = certainly yes).
(2) A general psychopathological profile was obtained using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS, Overall & Gorham, 1962; see Literature). This 18-item scale was used by the examining psychiatrist, who rated on a 7-point-scale (1 = non-existing, 7 = extremely distinct) whether certain psychopathological aspects apply to the participant. The BPRS contains five subscales (Anxiety / Depression, Anergia, Thought disturbance, Activation, Hostility)

As further psychopathological aspects, hypochondriacal fears, subjective health complaints, and participants' sleeping behavior were considered.
